A Dentist's Tips for Looking Better on Zoom Calls

For many of us, work looks very different than it used to. Remote interviews and virtual meetings are the norm, and looking your best on camera has become more important than ever.

Looking Your Virtual Best

Virtual meetings can put a real emphasis on your face that you may have never felt before IRL. And, since we all want to make a good impression, the way we look on camera may impact our confidence at both interviews and at work.

We've noticed that many of our patients are now more self-conscious about their teeth during video calls. One of the most effective ways to improve your on-camera look is by focusing on your smile. Fortunately, there are several simple steps you can take to enhance your appearance and boost your confidence on virtual meetings.

Brighten Your Smile with Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening treatments can help remove stains and discoloration, leaving you with a brighter, more attractive smile. In-office whitening treatments provide the most dramatic results, but at-home options like custom trays can also be effective. Be sure to talk to your dentist about professional options. Over-the-counter treatments are much less effective and can sometimes be abrasive and harmful to teeth.

Consider Veneers

For those with more significant dental concerns, such as chips, gaps, or misalignment, veneers may be a great option. These thin, custom-made shells are designed to cover the front surface of your teeth, providing a flawless, natural-looking smile. Veneers can be an excellent long-term solution for enhancing your appearance both on and off-camera.

Stay Hydrated for Healthier Skin and Lips

Proper hydration is easily overlooked, but it can be incredibly impactful for healthy, glowing skin and lips, which can make a big difference in your on-camera appearance. When you're dehydrated, your skin can appear dull, dry, and more prone to fine lines and wrinkles. Drinking water is also excellent for the health of your teeth and gums!

You can also use a humidifier in your workspace to help combat dry air, which can contribute to dehydrated skin and lips. Applying a moisturizing lip balm before your video calls can also help keep your lips looking smooth and supple.

Pay Attention to Lighting and Camera Angles

In addition to focusing on your smile and skin health, it's important to consider the technical aspects of your video setup. Proper lighting and camera angles can make a big difference in how you appear on screen.

Position your camera at eye level or slightly above to avoid unflattering angles. While everyone loves to see your smile, your eyes should be the spotlight.

Ensure that your face is well-lit by placing a light source in front of you rather than behind or to the side. Natural light from a window can work well, but if that's not an option, consider investing in a ring light or other soft, diffused lighting source.

Do a Dry Run

Before an important meeting or interview, do a practice session. Give yourself plenty of time to get set up and make sure you look your best. Also, pay attention to the background so that you are presenting a neat and orderly space.
